“Anyone Can Drown, But No One Should”
Friday 25th July marks World Drowning Prevention Day, a global initiative established by the United Nations to recognise the scale of drowning and call for coordinated action. For BlueFit and the local community, it serves as a timely reminder of the importance of water safety and active supervision.
Drowning is an issue that affects every nation, taking over 300,000 lives globally each year—many of them preventable. Because drowning predominantly impacts children and young people, we are taking this opportunity to remind families of our supervision policies, which are in place to help keep our community safe in and around the water.
Supervision Saves Lives
We maintain a high standard of safety through our aquatic supervision policies and proactive risk audits. Our trained staff do a fantastic job ensuring a safe environment, but parental or guardian supervision remains essential at all times.
Here is what you need to know when visiting our facilities:
- Children aged 0–5 and all non-swimmers: Must be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian at all times. This means the adult must be actively in the water with the child.
- Children aged 6–10: Must be closely and actively supervised. Maintain constant visual contact and be ready to enter the water.
- Minimise distractions: Put away mobile phones, avoid lengthy conversations, and stay clear of any distractions that can cause a fatal lapse in attention.
Take Action and "Go Blue"
Every small step we take can help save lives. Beyond active supervision at the pool, you can take action to prevent drowning by enrolling in swimming lessons, learning CPR, checking your home pool fences, and wearing a lifejacket in open water.
You can also join the global movement to promote water safety by Going Blue! On the 25th of July, we encourage our community to show their support by wearing blue to the pool, whether it is a blue swimsuit, blue swim cap, or simply bringing a blue towel.
This World Drowning Prevention Day, we encourage every family to take a moment to prioritise water safety. Stay close. Stay alert. Stay safe.
