Member Spotlight: A Local Dad and Leader Within the Community

As we celebrate Father's Day this month, we are reminded that being a dad is a constant juggling act of work, family commitments, and personal well-being. It takes a special kind of dedication (and a lot of heart) to carve out time for personal health while also stepping up in the community. Yet, right in our own neighbourhoods, there are everyday role models doing just that. They lead by example, proving that it’s possible to weave fitness, family time, and community connection into one deeply rewarding lifestyle.

We sat down with Jim, a dedicated father and a regular member at Mount Annan Leisure Centre, to learn more about what fuels his drive and how he manages to juggle it all with an inspiring outlook.

Finding Purpose on the Gym Floor

When asked what drives him to show up and lead by example in the community every week, Jim points directly to the physical and mental benefits of staying active, and avoiding the trap of a sedentary routine.

"It's important to stay as healthy as possible. I find it's an enjoyable hobby. The gym gives me purpose and strength to conquer other things in life. Otherwise, we just sit around and watch TV."

Building Momentum Through Consistency

Maintaining a health and fitness routine can sometimes feel like a chore, but Jim brings great energy to his workouts. He uses a mindset built on consistency to keep his momentum going, creating a positive ripple effect that reaches right into his home.

"Consistency creates motivation. Motivation is the key. When you see results, then that creates consistency. Your family members see you, and they then get involved and or do their own thing. I hate missing out on training days, so that mentality also can push you to show up each day."

Practical Advice for Juggling It All

For other dads in the community wondering how to successfully balance taking care of their own health while still being present for their families, Jim offers straightforward advice. He emphasises that self-care is a non-negotiable prerequisite for looking after the people who rely on you most.

"Make time for yourself to stay as healthy and fit as possible while also maintaining a healthy relationship with your family. It's a priority to look after yourself. If you're not staying healthy and looking after yourself, then how are you meant to look after your family?"

Jim reminds us that stepping up for our families and communities starts with making the conscious choice to take care of ourselves first!
