A Step Towards Empowering Disadvantaged Youth
On January 9, 2025, the BlueFit Foundation, AFL NSW/ACT, and Camden Council proudly announced the successful launch of the Camden Get Active Youth Academy. This collaborative initiative aims to uplift disadvantaged youth in the Camden area by providing them with valuable opportunities to engage in sports, improve their physical health, and explore potential career paths in the sport and recreation industry.
The program, led by BlueFit team members at Mount Annan Leisure Centre and Student Counsellors from Mount Annan Public School and Elizabeth Macarthur High School, engaged 25 at-risk students in a series of enriching sporting activities. Over six weeks, the participants were introduced to a variety of sports, including basketball, AFL, boxing, and gym training. The program culminated in a multisport round-robin event held on December 10, 2024, showcasing the participants' hard work and new skills.
The Camden Get Active Youth Academy not only aimed to increase physical activity for 8 to 11-year-olds but also worked to foster social connections and promote teamwork. Many of the students gained new friendships and grew in confidence as they participated in the activities. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provided insights into potential career paths in the sport and recreation sector, including opportunities for BlueFit Foundation’s Lifeguard and Swim Instructor courses, which offer free training to remove financial barriers and empower youth to explore local career opportunities.
The positive outcomes from the program were evident, with 75% of participants reporting improvements in their mental health and 88% stating they had acquired new skills. The program's emphasis on social interaction, fitness, and confidence-building proved to be particularly impactful for the participants, who expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to take part. “We are incredibly proud to partner with BlueFit and AFL NSW/ACT to deliver this program for Camden’s youth,” said a representative from Camden Council. “It demonstrates what can be achieved when organizations work together towards the shared goal of creating a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community for future generations. Programs like this provide invaluable opportunities for young people to thrive and reach their full potential."
With the success of this pilot program, the Camden Get Active Youth Academy has shown promising results in not only improving the physical fitness of young participants but also offering them the chance to develop meaningful career aspirations within the local community. Through continued collaboration and support, this initiative is paving the way for a healthier and more empowered future for Camden’s youth.
